Che Skaggs

Mebane, NC — Scott Belling is facing charges of DWI and felony death-by-vehicle after hitting an Orange County teenager. Che Skaggs was at least 10 feet off the road when he was struck and killed Saturday afternoon at 4503 Claibornes Road near Mebane. Highway Patrol reported Scott Belling, the driver, had a confirmed blood alcohol of .23, almost three times the legal threshold of .08 for driving while impaired. Friends and staff at the Orange High School remembered Skaggs on Monday. He was a sophomore. Belling was charged Saturday with DWI and felony hit-and-run. His was later charged with felony death-by-vehicle and is being held in the Orange County Jail. His bond was raised from $20,000 to $70,000 when the death-by-vehicle charge was added.

Che was my little brother, and let me tell you he was a very sweet child. He was not a teen who is into drugs, violence and alcohol as some 16 year olds are. He was a good kid, he loved skateboarding and spending time with his brother and family. Now on the other hand, you have Scott Bellings. He obviously had a love for drinking. Not only drinking, driving while impared and risking the lives of the innocent. And thanks to his love of that, I nor his mother, brother, stepfather and the rest of his family will have him to spend our time with. We will not see him get his drivers license, go to his first prom, graduate high school, college, go on vacations, celebrate birthdays, etc. You tell me, what hobby will you choose? Please if anything else comes from this, DON'T DRINK AND DRIVE. The innocent doesn't deserve the consequences. We love and miss you Che. Your sister, Tammie

This whole story is tragic. My thoughts are with Che's family and unfortunately I didn't have the pleasure of knowing him; as it sounds like he was a great kid. My thoughts are also with Scott Belling. I'm a friend & co-worker of Scott's. He's always been kind to me and my thoughts are also with him and his family. Alochol in excess mixed with driving (or even not driving) is such a horrible thing, and I agree with Tammie that if anything comes from this, let it be to not drink and drive. Or even better would be to get help before it leads to something that effects and hurts so many people. Peace to all.

This story about Che's death has haunted me for quite some time and I wish I could have reached out to the Skaggs family. My son, Jackson was killed as a result of a drunk driver. Tomorrow will be the 5th year anniversary of his death. Another year goes by where I won't see, talk or hold Jackson. My one mission in life is to somehow make a difference in this world so people do not drive drunk, so the innocent like Che and Jackson are not slaughtered. I certainly hope that Che's family is healing and finding a little bit of peace after this tragedy. I know life will never be the same for you because I know how my life has been turned upside down since Jackson's death. Please know my thoughts have been with your family for these past few years since Che's untimely death.
